This includes crude fertiliser as well as those manufactured, sulphur and unroasted pyrites.

3. Pearls, precious and semi-precious stones:

The diamond industry in the country draws heavily on imports of rough precious and semi-precious stones. Imports of pearls and precious and semi-precious stones amounted to Rs 9,813 crores during April to November, 1998, as compared to Rs 7,890 crores during the corresponding period of the previous year showing a posi­tive growth of 24.4%.

4. Capital goods:

Imports of capital goods largely represented by machinery, including transport equipment, project goods and professional instruments have shown an increase from Rs 16,449 crores during April to November, 1997, to Rs 20,404 crores during April to November, 1998, showing a growth of 24%.

In this category, project goods have shown a higher growth of (99%) followed by professional instruments (32.8%), electrical machinery (47.7%) and non-electrical machinery (3.7%) during April to November, 1998, as com­pared to the corresponding period of the previous year. A decline has been registered in transport equipment (17.3%).

5. Chemicals and chemical materials:

Organic and inorganic chemical ma­terials and medicinal and pharmaceutical products constituted the major components of imports under this category. The import of organic and inor­ganic chemicals rose to Rs 7,660 crores during April to November, 1998, from Rs 6,982 crores during April to November, 1997, showing a positive growth of 9.7%.

Medicinal and pharmaceutical products have registered an increase from Rs 898 crores during April to November, 1997, to Rs 986 crores during April to November, 1998, showing a positive growth of 9.8%.
